A2Z Infrastructure will set-up the largest integrated project in Asia for Municipal Solid Waste Management at Kanpur

For the purpose of protection of the environment and effective management and disposal of the solid waste, Kanpur Municipal Corporation has allotted an end-to-end integrated project to A2Z Infrastructure. Under this mandate a subsidiary of A2Z Maintenance and Engineering Services Ltd – A2Z Infrastructure Pvt Ltd – will set-up the largest integrated project in Asia for Municipal Solid Waste management for Kanpur city. Kanpur Municipal Corporation had given mandate to A2Z for processing and disposal of solid waste earlier in June 2008. Now this mandate is extended to cover collection and transport also.

At the joint press conference organised by the company and the Kanpur Municipal Corporation, the company announced that it was setting up the first in India, an integrated solid waste to power project at Kanpur.  The energy will be obtained from RDF – Refuse Derived Fuel for consumption of the plant. It is expected that the power plant will be operative by March 2011 and it will have a capacity to produce 15 MW of Energy. The company has plans to sell this electricity to the state, as well as on commercial basis.

The company promises that the electricity produced will be completely indigenous and the technology to be used for RDF is organic in nature. RDF is the best substitute for coal and produces less pollution than coal. Mr R Vikram Singh, the municipal commissioner of Kanpur city said on this occasion that he was proud of the fact that Kanpur occupies a place amongst the top 10 most sanitised cities in the country as per the Ministry of Urban Development. He believed that in coming year Kanpur will be at the top amongst the cleanest cities in the country.  He complimented A2Z company and reminded the residents of Kanpur city that their attitude toward cleanliness should change now wherein the technical revolution brought in by the A2Z company is properly utilised.

A2Z Infrastructure had earlier done processing and disposal of the solid waste in October 2009. Currently, 1,500 MT of Municipal solid waste generated daily by city population of 31,16,263 is processed by the company. By eliminating the production of Methane gas at the land-fill site this project has substantially contributed to the reduction of Green House Gas Pollution.

The entire project complies with the strict norms of the Central Public Health and Environmental Engineering Organisation. The project is the only integrated resource recovery facility and possesses diverse portfolio of derivatives from the waste. The company produces 150 MT of compost daily from the municipal solid waste under the brand name Vasundhara. The leading MSW player in the country produces the largest quantity of compost from the solid waste. The quality of the compost produced is as per the standards set by FCO (Fertiliser Control Order) Amendment 2009 and this is the only Govt certified compost in the country. The company has plans to produce 300 MT of compost everyday by August 2010.  UP Water Board C & DS Project Manager Shri R N Goyal who allocates the MSW projects and keeps an eye on these projects in UP state, has said that the Kanpur MSW project has made commendable progress and other ULBS projects in the country will follow this.

Dr Rajnish Mehra the CEO of A2Z Infrastructure Ltd mentioned that India produces 142,000 MT of municipal solid waste everyday and it is growing at the rate of 5% per annum. The company has a portfolio of Kanpur, Indore, Patna, Varanasi, Meerut etc cities where 6,000 MT of municipal solid waste is processed every day. The Govt of India has announced the National Urban Sanitation Policy to ensure that all the cities and villages remain healthier. The Govt has included 100% urban sanitation in its 11th Five Years Plan. The target is to ensure 100% of the urban population can access safe sanitation facility by 2012. We expect the Govt to offer us support towards that.

A2Z Infrastructure Ltd, in association with Kanpur Municipal Corporation has organised the World Environment Day on June 5, 2010. The company will distribute plants in the entire city to the people of Kanpur through 100 mini-trucks. The company will ask questions about the environment and also distribute gifts to people. The regional divisional commissioner Mr Amit Ghosh will show green flag to these efforts.

In a report produced by the Ministry of Urban Development, Govt of India  during 2009-10 on sanitation, Kanpur occupies the 10th place amongst 423 cities in India.  A2Z Infrastructure Pvt Ltd is a subsidiary of A2Z Maintenance and Engineering Services Ltd. It aims to protect the environment keeping its business interests in Municipal Solid Waste management, Sewage Treatment, Power generation from Municipal Solid Waste, Renewable Energy and co-generation etc. It is pioneer in the development of the concept of Integrated Resource Recovery Facility. Currently, it has the portfolio of 6,000 MT per day of solid waste management.
